The first vineyards were planted in Chateauneuf-du-Pape in 1157 under the direction of the bishop of Avignon. In the XIII century village of Chateauneuf populated by 1,000 people, has already had a beautiful vineyard area of 300 hectares. In 1308 Pope Clement V breaks new vineyards here. But the greatest contribution to the development and reputation of Chateauneuf introduced by Pope John XXII, who later bequeathed him a prestigious name “Vin du Pape”. John XXII also built the famous castle of Chateauneuf, who for many years was the papal summer residence.

In the vineyards Chapoutier Chateauneuf-du-Pape is grown mainly Grenache variety, as well as a small proportion of Syrah and Mourvèdre. The vineyards are located on the terrace, consisting of four parts, the surface of which is covered with large boulders, probably left over from the old course of the Rhone. Mediterranean climate prevails here, and Chateauneuf-du-Pape differs most arid conditions among all the vineyards of the region. During the growing season irrigation and watering vineyards strictly prohibited, in extreme cases, watering vines are allowed, but this requires special permission of the French government. Such specific growing conditions contribute to the fact that the grape gets excellent taste aromatic characteristics with hints of dark fruit and spice. At harvest is carried out strict selection of berries. Vinification is made in traditional concrete sealed containers. The fermentation lasts approximately 3 weeks, it passes at a high temperature for obtaining optimal color and tannins. Excerpt wine “Chateauneuf du Pape” La Bernardine “carried out in concrete tanks from 12 to 15 months.

Name Chapoutier present in the Rhône Valley since 1808 year. Distant ancestor Chapoutier – Polydor was the first who began to buy vines, becoming not just a winegrower but wine producer and businessman.
